A carpet of bluebells in the Forest of Dean // In pictures

Bluebells in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire England

After what always feels like an endless winter in Britain, the first bluebell I see is a sign that days are getting longer and temperatures are getting warmer – summer is finally on its way. Near my home in Gloucestershire, the Forest of Dean is one of the best places in the country to see native English bluebells. Time it right and there are so many amongst this ancient woodland that they merge into a dense blue carpet across the forest floor. They start off a deep, purpley-blue when they’re youngest and fade to a soft pale shade towards the end of the season. They usually flower in early May but get there quickly – the season only lasts a few weeks. Good places to find them in the Forest of Dean include Cannop Ponds and the Speech House Hotel, or check out the Woodland Trust for details of bluebell woods across the UK.

Gorgeous pictures, which remind me of many happy days spent wandering through the Forest of Dean. It makes me feel a little bit homesick!

Britain in the spring is the loveliest time (between the showers anyway!).

Wow! That's so beautiful. I need posts like this to remind me how amazing the UK is, because I'm about to leave Sydney and it's making me very sad!

It's easy to forget how many gorgeous places there are in the UK – though Sydney's pretty stunning too!

Beautiful! I loved seeing the little group of bluebells in my garden but this shows I should travel a little bit further in England (looks like something out of A Midsummer Night's Dream) :)

It does, doesn't it! It would be a great place for a performance of it.
