10 great villas in Mallorca – where you don't need a car

AD: This post is brought to you in association with Villa Finder

With everything from beachfront apartments to houses in the mountains, Mallorca is a great place for a villa holiday. But what if you don’t drive – or prefer not to rent a car? Many properties are in out-of-the-way areas which you can’t reach without driving, but there are also plenty of places which you can get to using Mallorca’s public transport system.

In partnership with Villa Finder, I’ve chosen a selection of villas in Mallorca which you can reach without a car. Each of them is accessible using the island’s buses or trains – and you can explore the area by public transport too. Details of how to get there are included, but you can get more details on bus routes and timetables on the TIB website.

Pollensa and Port de Pollensa

On Mallorca’s northern coast, the former fishing town of Port de Pollensa (Puerto Pollensa) is now one of the island’s most popular spots. It has miles of sandy beaches, backed with palm trees and lined with cafés, bars and restaurants. There are also some lovely local walks, including the Pine Walk, a two-mile promenade along the waterfront.

The nearby historic town of Pollensa is a favourite with artists and writers. Its narrow streets are dotted with churches, boutique shops and galleries. Pollensa and Port de Pollensa are only 15 minutes apart on the 322 bus, so you can easily visit both.

Get there: There isn’t a direct bus to Pollensa from Palma airport, so you need to travel into Palma first. Take the A1 bus from Palma airport to the Plaça d’Espanya (20 minutes). Then the 301 bus runs to Pollensa (55 minutes) and Puerto Pollensa (70 minutes).

Villa Roser Vell is a three-bedroom townhouse sleeping five, located right in the heart of Old Pollensa. It has a smart, contemporary design with a state-of-the-art kitchen and TV lounge. And there’s a private swimming pool tucked away in a walled courtyard.

Londres Apartment in Puerto Pollensa is a stunning beachfront property, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s an open-plan kitchen/dining/living space with glass sliding doors onto a spacious balcony looking out over Puerto Pollensa Bay. It comes with sun loungers, outdoor sofas and a dining table so you can eat outside.

Villa Amenita feels like a country property but is only a short walk from Puerto Pollensa. This traditional Mallorcan villa sleeps eight in four bedrooms. There are lush gardens surrounded by mountains, a private swimming pool and outdoor dining area.

Port d’Alcúdia

Southeast of Pollensa, the Port d’Alcúdia is another beautiful stretch of coastline, with shallow, clear waters and sandy beaches making it ideal for families. There are lots of watersports available, from paddleboarding to paragliding. Or you can take a boat trip and go dolphin spotting, go snorkelling or scuba diving, or just watch the sun set.

Port d’Alcúdia is also close to the medieval town of Alcúdia – 30 minutes’ walk away or five minutes on the 322 or 324 bus. Alcúdia has a beautifully preserved old town, and you can walk around its walls. You can also visit the ruins of the Roman town of Pollèntia.

Get there: Take the A1 bus from Palma airport to Plaça d’Espanya. Then catch the 302 bus (65 minutes) to Port d’Alcúdia (it also stops in Alcúdia on the way).

And the beach is just through the gate.

Ca’n Picafort

Ca’n Picafort is 10km south of Port d’Alcúdia, on the same stretch of coast. It’s another good choice for families, with a busy Blue Flag beach – though if you walk along the coast you can find quieter stretches of sand. Like Port d’Alcúdia there are lots of different watersports available, as well as nature trails in nearby S’Albufera Nature Reserve.

The 302 bus runs from Ca’n Picafort to Port d’Alcúdia, Palma and the leather-making town of Inca. Or you can catch the 325 bus to the fishing port of Cala Ratjada.

Get there: Take the A1 bus from Palma airport to Plaça d’Espanya. Then take the 302 bus, which continues on to Ca’n Picafort from Port d’Alcúdia (80 minutes).

Sóller and Port de Sóller

Hilltop Sóller is a traditional Mallorca town, set between the Tramuntana Mountains and the coast. It’s surrounded by orange groves and has some beautiful mansions built thanks to the citrus trade – one is now home to the Can Prunera Modernist art museum.

There are many hiking and cycling routes, and beaches in the seaside resort of Port de Sóller. The port is around 45 minutes’ walk from Sóller, or you can catch a bus or one of the vintage trams. You can also take an easy day trip from Sóller to Palma on board the Tren de Sóller, a historic narrow-gauge railway originally built in 1912 to transport oranges.

Get there: Take the A1 bus from Palma airport to Plaça d’Espanya. Then you can either take the 204 bus (40 minutes) or Tren de Sóller (1 hour) from there to Sóller.

Es Faro House in Port de Sóller is right on the waterfront, with unobstructed sea views and a terrace where you can sit and read or watch the boats. It sleeps eight in four bedrooms, with a simple, minimalist décor. There’s a full kitchen and a lounge to relax in. And the beach and harbour shops and restaurants are just a few minutes away.

Deia

Deia is one of Mallorca’s prettiest villages, part of the Tramuntana Mountains UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its good looks draw in the rich and famous, many of them coming to stay at the La Residencia – a luxury hotel once owned by Richard Branson.

Although buses run to Valldemossa, Sóller or Palma, Deia is mainly a place to slow down and relax. You can visit Ca n’Alluny, former home of English poet Robert Graves, and take in the views of the Mediterranean and the mountains from one of the miradors. It’s also 3.5km or a 45-minute walk from the town to the rocky cove at Cala Deià.

Get there: Take the A1 bus from Palma airport to Plaça d’Espanya. Then catch the 203 bus from there to Deia via Valldemossa (55 minutes).

Villa Ca Na Xesca is a four-bedroom, two-bathroom Mallorcan villa close to the centre of Deia. It has a courtyard overlooking the village with outdoor seating and dining. And there’s a comfortable, homely feel inside, with local artworks, games and books.

Or splash out on a stay at Villa Sa Llupia. This spectacular villa has four en-suite bedrooms, each with luxury bedding and bespoke furniture. A rustic-chic style is paired with top-of-the-range appliances. There’s a terrace and infinity pool surrounded by olive and cypress trees with views over Deia’s rooftops. And cosy fires for cooler nights.
